Samantha Dufresne has been named the 2024-2025 Grissom Elementary Support Professional of the Year!
This is Samantha's second year at Grissom. She began as a substitute teacher before taking a full-time position as a teacher's assistant in a Montessori classroom. She is currently subbing in a 4th grade class while transitioning to a teaching position.
We asked Samatha a few questions to learn more about her and her position.
Why did you want to work in education?
I fell in love with the Montessori program at Grissom three years ago when our son started pre-K. There is something magical about watching a child fully grasp a concept and the pride it gives them. I knew instantly after observing Julie Anderson and Brandy Van Tassel in their classroom that I needed to be a part of the amazing staff at Grissom and help spread that happiness. Shortly after, I applied to go back to college to get a degree in elementary education and started picking up every substitute slot open at Grissom until they hired me full time. I have the opportunity to try to change how kids, especially my own, feel about school, and I plan to make the most of it.
Can you share what your time in TPS has been like?
I have learned patience, that sometimes a child just needs an adult in their corner, and the science behind teaching children to read. I have enjoyed getting to be at school with my children, getting to be on their schedule, and having a job that I can truly be proud of that fulfills my soul like I never thought a job could. What was the most unexpected was the support from our staff and principal to help me reach my goal of finishing my degree and how amazing they all are at sharing tips and resources. I also had no idea that I would need this many baskets!
What are passionate about outside of work?
I am really passionate about health and ensuring I get the most out of my life with my husband and kids. I also love crochet and cooking!
Anything else you would like everyone to know?
The Montessori program at Grissom changed EVERYTHING for my family in so many ways. I cannot promote that enough to everyone I talk to. The way the staff and children interact with the materials is mind-blowing, and I wish everyone could have the chance to learn in this manner.
