Why should my child attend pre-kindergarten?

When you walk into our pre-K classrooms, students are laughing, playing, singing, and creating art, which are huge parts of learning for our youngest kids. Through these activities, children develop language and math skills, build critical thinking skills, learn how to problem solve, build motor skills, and stimulate brain growth. Pre-K fosters the natural curiosity of four-year-olds as they begin to ask questions about the world around them. In pre-K classrooms, children find answers through exploration, experimentation, and conversation with peers and teachers.

In pre-K, children also learn important social skills that they can’t learn in isolation but are best learned with other children in social situations such as teamwork, how to compromise, be respectful of others, communication, sharing, and managing their own feelings. Pre-K also provides a place where children learn to be independent, confident, and learn how to make decisions and choices for themselves. They also learn how to act in school – how to listen, follow directions, and pay attention.

The academic and social skills students build in pre-K will help them to not only be ready for kindergarten, but help them to be successful throughout their school careers and in life.

Research tells us that students who attend pre-K are better prepared for kindergarten than those who don’t.

Children who attend high-quality pre-K enter kindergarten with better prereading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not.

Attending pre-K also has long lasting impacts.

A Georgetown study of Tulsa students showed that children who attended pre-K had better performance in middle school math, were 31% less likely to be retained, and were 34% less likely to be chronically absent.
